Terms of Use: Data Protection and Ethical Commitment

Learn about EDITO's GDPR compliance, as well as the security and confidentiality protocols for data processing and standards for the responsible and ethical use of the platform.

Context

At the heart of the Horizon Europe initiative, the EDITO platform is more than just a technical infrastructure; it is a trusted environment governed by strict compliance and ethical commitments. The integration policy and associated technical guidelines place data protection and user accountability at the center of their governance.

This operational framework natively incorporates GDPR requirements, ensuring robust confidentiality and security for data processing by EDITO and its contributors. Beyond mere legal compliance, the document establishes an “ethical and responsible user commitment,” clearly defining intellectual property rights, terms of use for resources, and the principle of open data (“as open as possible, as closed as necessary”).

Terms of Service

All users of and contributors to EDITO must adhere to the EDITO Terms of Service.

Data Protection

Data Processing by EDITO

Personal data will be collected, processed and published in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/679, also known as GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) as detailed in the EDITO privacy policy.

Data Processing by contributors to EDITO

EDITO contributors must process personal data integrated into EDITO in compliance with the applicable EU, international and national law on data protection (in particular, Regulation 2016/67919). They must ensure that personal data is:

  • Processed lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner in relation to the data subjects.

  • Collected for specified, explicit and legitimate purposes and not further processed in a manner that is incompatible with those purposes.

  • Adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the purposes for which they are processed.

  • Accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date.

  • Kept in a form which permits identification of data subjects for no longer than is necessary for the purposes for which the data is processed.

  • Processed in a manner that ensures appropriate security of the data.

General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) Compliance

All data onboarded into EDITO must adhere to the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), EU Regulation no. 2016/679, of the 27th of April 2016.

Confidentiality and Security

EU Classified information

If EU classified information is onboarded or generated in EDITO, it must be treated in accordance with the security classification guide (SCG) and security aspect letter (SAL) set out in Decision 2015/4441 and its implementing rules until it is declassified.

Ethical and Responsible Use

Assets onboarded into EDITO should be in line with the highest ethical standards and the applicable EU, international and national law on ethical principles. They should also respect basic EU values (such as respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and human rights, including the rights of minorities).

All EDITO contributors should only use EDITO in compliance with:

  • Ethical principles (including the highest standards of research integrity).

  • Applicable EU, international and national law, including the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and its Supplementary Protocols.

Ethics

EDITO contributors should pay particular attention to the right to privacy, the right to the protection of personal data, the right to the physical and mental integrity of persons, the right to non-discrimination, the need to ensure protection of the environment and high levels of human health protection. EDITO contributors should ensure that assets onboarded in EDITO have an exclusive focus on civil applications. EDITO contributors should ensure that the data, models and applications they contribute to EDITO do not:

  • Aim at human cloning for reproductive purposes.

  • Intend to modify the genetic heritage of human beings which could make such modifications heritable (with the exception of research relating to cancer treatment of the gonads).

  • Intend to create human embryos solely for the purpose of research or for the purpose of stem cell procurement, including by means of somatic cell nuclear transfer).

  • Lead to the destruction of human embryos (for example, for obtaining stem cells).

Data, models and applications involving research on human embryos or human embryonic stem cells may be integrated into EDITO only if the EDITO contributor has obtained explicit approval (in writing) from the EDITO platform operator.
